About
Pepe the King Prawn, whose full name is Pepino Rodrigo Serrano Gonzales, hails from Málaga, Spain. He was
created by
Bill Barretta in 1996, 9 years before Matt Furie invented Pepe the Frog. According to a 1999 TVGuide.com
interview, he started out as a chef in Madrid, before moving
to Hollywood and following his true calling in show business. Pepe remarked, "There were one too many close
calls in the
kitchen. I was mistaken for an appetizer, okay."
Pepe has become one of the most popular Muppet characters, providing comedic relief in major supporting roles similar to Rizzo the Rat and appearing in most major Muppet productions since his introduction. He, and Bobo the Bear are the only Muppet characters originally created for Muppets Tonight that are still prominently featured in The Muppets franchise. Pepe is frequently cast in the main ensemble, while Bobo is a supporting player.
